NEW YORK TIMES ESTIMATES 45.7 MILLION AMERICANS UNINSURED
In an August 22, 2009 editorial entitled "The Uninsured" - the New York Times says an estimated 45.7 million Americans may be without any health insurance. The figure is taken from a 2007 annual census survey. President Obama referred to “46 million uninsured Americans” in May of 2009. Some of the disturbing consequences include:
- Studies have shown uninsured people are more likely than insured people to die prematurely.
- To have cancers diagnosed too late, die from heart failure, a heart attack, a stroke or a severe injury.
- The Institute of Medicine estimated that perhaps 18,000 deaths a year among adults could be attributed to lack of insurance.
The Commonwealth Fund estimates 25 million Americans w/health insurance may have "woefully inadequate policies with high deductibles and restrictions" which also prevent proper care and forced many into debt to pay medical bills. The lack of health coverage, early detection and prevention can clearly mean the difference between life and death.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
- DENTAL EXAMS & DISEASE
Going to the dentist can save your life -- yet 75% of Americans do not have dental coverage and most put off regular visits. Recent estimates say up to 80% of people unknowingly have some amount of chronic gum disease. It has been implicated as a factor in heart disease, stroke, diabetes, pre-mature births and low birth weight. A Reuters Health report says gum disease could significantly increase a person's risk of stroke according to results of a national study. Health care professionals say it is critical to have teeth cleaned and examined twice a year. Exams also do the following:
- Oral cancer screening: Check the face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums for any signs of oral cancer.
- Gum disease evaluation: Check the gums and bone around the teeth for any signs of periodontal disease.
- Examination of tooth decay: All tooth surfaces checked for decay with special dental instruments.
- Examination of existing restorations: Check current fillings, crowns, etc.
Regular check ups and cleanings can prolong life, offer early warnings of health problems and ultimately save patients money, time, pain and needless suffering.
